“When I have been listened to and when I have been heard, I am able to re-perceive my world in a new way and to go on.” Carl Rogers
What is focusing?
Focusing is a practice that helps us find our way through difficult issues by listening to the whole body— the whole self — not just our heads.
We tune into what’s going on for us in the moment, acknowledging thoughts and stories that are at play whilst also listening at a deeper, more subtle level to how our body feels. We journey and explore what is present and this allows us to access a deep inner knowing that our bodies hold, what we might call our intuition or gut instinct.
How does focusing work?
As a focusing practitioner I hold the space for you without offering any advice, judgments or analysis. The emphasis is on your relationship with yourself and your body. I support you to meet your own experience with curiosity and compassion.
Meeting your experience in a non-judgemental, accepting way allows deep shifts and changes to happen. It can help make sense of confusing feelings, past experiences and support you to meet difficult decisions or issues in your life that feel uncomfortable, tangled or stuck.
How does focusing help?
By creating more space and encouraging a gentler way of engaging with your thoughts and feelings and what’s happening moment-by-moment, allows a greater sense of ease, openness and self-acceptance.
A focusing session isn’t the same as counselling or psychotherapy. It’s more like learning a skill that you can apply to any area of your life. Focusing can be used to unravel personal issues or life themes, difficulties in relationships or with work. Or some people use it to support their creative work, their personal development or spiritual practice.
What happens in a focusing session?
Sessions are a mixture of tuition and focusing time. The session will teach you how to feel into your body to find your intuitive knowing. I will gently lead you into the session and be there with you as your companion and guide. I hold the space for you without offering any advice, judgement or analysis. I won’t ask you for any information about what you’re working with, although you may choose to share that if you wish.
And I will break the process down into a series of steps so that you’ll be empowered to use it by yourself or with someone else trained in this approach. There will be time for questions and for anything else that needs to be acknowledged before we close.
